PaySafe Application Process

  • Two application methods available:
    • Digital application through the iShare/iAccess system (recommended)
    • Paper application (less efficient)
  • Digital application requires:
    • Agent numbers for identification
    • Selection of bank partner (Citizens recommended for most merchants)
    • Choosing pricing structure (standard interchange, three-tiered, or flat rate)
    • Changing platform from default TSYS to OMAW for Clover setups
  • System guides users through required merchant information fields
  • Credit reports can be run through the system, or driver's license can be provided instead

Equipment Options

  • Free Clover equipment program available (requires $99 shipping fee)
  • Clover device options include:
    • Station (full POS system)
    • Mini (smaller POS with customer-facing swivel)
    • Compact (desktop terminal)
    • Flex (handheld terminal with Wi-Fi)
    • Go (mobile card reader similar to Square)
    • Pocket (version of Flex for table side use without receipt printer)
  • Additional peripherals can be added (cash drawer, barcode scanner, etc.)
  • Different shipping options available (priority overnight recommended)

Key Considerations

  • ACH payments processed through Telecheck (third-party service through Fiserv) - it is recommended to have merchants sign up directly with Telecheck
  • Auto-batch timing differs between platforms:
    • Omaha platform cutoff is 7 PM Eastern
    • Clover with tips cutoff is 6 PM Eastern
  • Multiple terminal setups may require special approval for merchants processing over $200K+/month

Merchant Payment Processing Banks

PaySafe partners with two main acquiring banks to process merchant payments. Each bank supports specific business types, so selecting the right one is critical for compliance and account approval.

1. Merrick Bank - used for merchants in high-risk industries such as smoke shops, vape retailers, and CBD-related businesses.
  • Specializes in underwriting and compliance for restricted categories.

  • Merchants in this group must follow stricter approval guidelines.

  • Always ensure supporting documentation is complete before submission.

2. Citizens Bank - used for all standard merchant types not covered under Merrick Bank.
  • Supports general retail, food, service, and e-commerce businesses.

  • Provides flexible onboarding and faster approvals for low-risk categories.

  • Recommended for most everyday merchants that don’t involve restricted products.

Choosing the correct bank ensures your merchant account is processed under the right underwriting guidelines and avoids unnecessary delays or declines.
